Draft Animal Power Network

Advancing the Practical Application of Draft Animal Power

Who we are

The Draft Animal-Power Network (DAPNet) is a group of practitioners with a shared commitment to preserving traditional draft animal practices while advancing innovative solutions for land stewardship, food production, and community enrichment.  DAPNet began as informal educational gatherings and workshops on Vermont farms in the early 2000s. Farmers and loggers Carl Russell and Lisa McCrory organized the first Northeast Animal Power Field Days (NEAPFD) in 2007, turning these gatherings into an annual event that fostered a growing community. What began as a local effort quickly expanded, leading to the formation of an online forum that attracted teamsters and students from across the country.  Eventually, in 2011, DAPNet incorporated as a nonprofit organization. Today, while still grounded in the Northeast, DAPNet connects farmers, foresters, loggers, teamsters, homesteaders, and supporters across the globe, all dedicated to advancing the use of draft animals in our working landscapes.

Our Mission:
“provide connection to resources that preserve and advance the use of draft animal power in the working landscape”

What we do

Our work is fueled by a deep love for the land and the animals that help us steward it. We offer a range of programs designed to educate, connect, and inspire the draft-power community:

  • DAPMap: A growing directory connecting global draft animal practitioners, businesses, and institutions.

  • DAPChats: Roundtable discussions with experienced teamsters and industry professionals.

  • DAPCast: Our podcast exploring the intersection of sustainable land use and draft animal power.

  • Monthly Newsletter: Bringing the latest news, events, and resources to our community.

  • Annual Field Days and Other Events: Hosting intensive workshops and hands-on learning opportunities for both beginners and seasoned practitioners

  • Facebook Discussion Group: A vibrant community with over 8,000 members sharing advice, stories, and support.

  • Member List-Serve: Keeping our members connected and informed via Google Groups. Become a member.

DAPNet is run by a volunteer Board of Directors and other volunteers. We rely on memberships, donations, sponsorships and grants for our operations, providing the website, hosting events, publishing the newsletter, and for continued development of the organization as a hub for people interested in working with draft animals.
